High-Leverage Language Supports in Curricular Materials
Tuesday November 5, 2024 8:00am - 9:20am EST
TBA
Target Audience: Teachers PK-5, Teachers 6-8, Teachers 9-12

Almost 100% of Newton's teachers are SEI-endorsed (endorsed in Sheltered English Instruction) and all teachers teach the academic language of their content area! Let's look at curricular materials' existing language supports for all learners, especially English learners, and/or identify what additional ELL supports could be embedded. Attendees should come ready to work with a curriculum unit, bringing the unit of their choice to the session. Educators will embed the following into existing units as needed: learning objectives, language objectives, strategic home language supports, visuals, and/or other language-enhanced supports. Intended outcomes for educators include: explore existing language supports in a unit, embed enhanced language supports, and explore AI as a resource for making some of this easier. This session works across all grade levels and any content area. **Please note: Viewing the SEI video (on ARXEd mandated training) is a prerequisite to this session. Presentation/Sharing of Educator Handbook: Sheltering Instruction for English Learners in Middle and High School
Tuesday November 5, 2024 1:40pm - 3:00pm EST
TBA
Target Audience: Teachers 6-8 Teachers 9-12, Special Educators, Specialists (Arts, Music, PE)

In 2022-2023 Natasha Galichina (NSHS ESL Teacher) and Kathy Lobo (Brown MS ESL Teacher) received a Brown Professional Development Grant to write a handbook (printed and electronic) that is a desktop reference guide that includes some theory but mostly practice for how to shelter instruction to better meet the needs of English learners (ELs). The handbook for teachers of middle and high school aged students teaching all subject areas will be presented and shared in this session. The handbook addresses what ELs at a range of English proficiency levels need/would benefit from. Participants will receive the electronic link to the handbook. Some paper copies of the handbook will also be available.
