Target Audience: K-2 educators, ELL teachers, reading specialists, interventionists, literacy aides, and special education teachers.
Overview:
This workshop will equip educators with a clear understanding of structured literacy, its importance, and practical guidance for implementing it in the classroom. Participants will learn how to use a structured literacy lesson template, apply backwards planning techniques, and practice creating their own lessons using decodable texts. The workshop will focus on providing educators with actionable skills to support students’ reading development.
Objectives:
  1. Understand the rationale behind structured literacy.
  2. Learn how to use a structured literacy lesson template.
  3. Practice backwards planning for structured literacy lessons.
  4. Create lessons using decodable texts.
Target Audience:
K-2 educators, reading specialists, interventionists, literacy aides, and special education teachers.
Workshop Outline:
  1. Welcome & Introduction 
  2. Overview of workshop goals and agenda.
  3. Structured Literacy Overview 
    • Rationale
    • Key principles: explicit, systematic, and multimodal  instruction.
  4. Lesson Template Overview 
    • Components of the structured literacy lesson.
  5. Backwards Planning
    • Introduction to backwards planning with decodable texts.
  6. Guided/Independent Practice 
    • Participants create lesson plans using decodable texts.
  7. Wrap-Up & Q&A
    Final reflections, questions, and resources for continued support.
Pre-Workshop Preparation:
Participants should bring at least two decodable texts. If needed, they can request materials from their school’s literacy specialist.
Duration:
80 minutes
Outcome:
Participants will leave with an understanding of the importance of structured literacy, ready-to-use lesson plans, and practical strategies for effective reading instruction.
