K-12 schools are on the front lines of supporting the mental and behavioral needs of K-
12 students. Thus, it is important that school-based providers use efficient, research
supported methods and strategies leading toward lasting change. Brief Solution
Focused Counseling (BSFC) is a flexible, child-centered approach to counseling that
can be used as part of group sessions, individual counseling, and even in teacher
consultations. This session will cover the basics of incorporating BSFC into your school-
based work, facilitate hands-on practice with the BSFC process, and will provide
resources and tools for monitoring intervention effectiveness.
Objectives
1) Attendees will learn about the humanistic theoretical foundation of BSFC and why
that makes it a powerful approach to use with K-12 students.
2) Attendees will learn how to incorporate BSFC into existing school-based counseling
work.
3) Through hands-on practice, attendees will learn how to employ specific student-
centered language through the BSFC process.
4) Attendees will learn how to effectively monitor intervention BSFC effectiveness.
