Digital Natives: Exploring how Newton Students Use and Perceive Educational Technology

Damian Bebell (1), Zhexun “Cinna” Xin (1), Gareth Cleveland (1), Kayla Burt (2), and Mahima Nambiar (1)
(1) Lynch School of Education and Human Development, Boston College
(2) MIT Media Lab

In communities around the globe, schools have struggled with the challenges and opportunities of technology in classrooms and at home. In this workshop, a research team from Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and Human Development will share highlights and lead a hands-on, data-informed exploration of a Spring 2024 BC/NPS survey of students access, use, and beliefs towards technology.

With nearly 1800 responses from grades 5, 8, and 10th students in over 20 Newton schools, this workshop will first share examples and highlights of student access, practices, and perceptions on technology and educational technology across the district. For example, attendees will investigate trends in how Newton students use technology inside and outside of the classroom for a wide variety of purposes. Using data dashboard tools (provided in session), session attendees will be given reflection time to first-hand explore and investigate Newton students’ access, use, and beliefs of technology (age/grade differences, gender differences, differences across subject areas, etc.).

The study results and data-informed reflection activities will provide teachers and school leaders an opportunity to reflect deeply from a student perspective on educational technology. Session attendees will enrich their understanding of NPS students' current technology access, experiences, and beliefs such that participants own understanding will deepen towards maximizing educational opportunities from technology resources and recognizing challenges and pitfalls.

Responding to AI: Developing an Effective and Pragmatic Approach to Address Student Use and Misuse of AI Tools
Tuesday November 5, 2024 1:40pm - 3:00pm EST
TBA
Target Audience: Adminstrators, Teachers 6-8 Teachers 9-12, Special Educators

Student use and misuse of AI continues to evolve. While there are innovative approaches for educators to use AI, investigations to detect AI plagiarism is time consuming, stressful and ineffective. This facilitated workshop will give educators time and space to develop an effective and pragmatic approach to respond to AI in our classrooms. By the end of the workshop, educators will develop common strategies they can use in their classroom, and we can clarify school-wide processes when students misuse AI. We will research best practices and develop a document that can be shared district wide to help educators and schools to respond to AI.

Target Audience: Teachers PK-5, Para Professionals

In this session, we will present ScratchJr, a programming app designed specifically for children ages 4-8 to learn computer science concepts in a playful and developmentally appropriate way. The ScratchJr app, the curriculum, and pedagogical framework have all been created by the DevTech Research Group based upon 20 years of research and development.
