A Long Way Home: Teaching about Immigration in a Local Context
Tuesday November 5, 2024 8:00am - 9:20am EST
TBA
Target Audience: Teachers PK-5, Teachers 6-8 Teachers 9-12

What makes a place home, and why might someone choose to leave that place for a foreign country? In this session you’ll use artifacts and documents from the 19th and 20th centuries to put yourself in the shoes a person deciding whether to stay in their home country or emigrate to Newton. We’ll share strategies for teaching about immigration, discuss ideas for using primary sources in your instruction, and uncover the diversity of Newton’s early immigrant residents. You’ll leave the program with new ideas, a stronger understanding of Newton’s immigrant history, and resources to enhance your practice.

TikTok and American Politics
Tuesday November 5, 2024 8:00am - 9:20am EST
TBA
Target Audience: Teachers 6-8 Teachers 9-12, Special Educators

The goal of the session is to give educators a better understanding of how TikTok works and how it might impact the American political system. It is essential for educators to understand TikTok because so many kids (and now adults!) are on it consistently and therefore influenced by it. As of 2024 more than 40% of American teenagers are getting their news from TikTok itself, according to Pew Research. In this session, we'll tackle how short-form video has influenced the American electoral process - and how it might in the future -  through the examination of how different mediums have influenced American politics in the past. Hopefully educators will come away from the session more comfortable in teaching explicitly about TikTok in their classrooms. Multiple lessons about TikTok will be provided for teachers to take with them and use with their own students.
